The Beaches
Located a few kilometers from the city center and served by public transport, the beaches are famous for their long sandy beaches, with its tranquil sea, and a vivid blue sky, and can still offer the possibility of an encounter with nature away from the crowds of other places. It is on these beaches that is still practiced one of the most original forms of traditional maritime fishing, the "Xávega Art". The nearest beaches of Aveiro are "Praia da Barra", with its lighthouse scratched in red, and the "Costa Nova" Beach with its traditional houses of multicolored stripes. These two locations, besides offering high quality sea and estuary beach, have the best conditions for the practice of water activities and sports. |
The Ria, the Salinas and Biodiversity
The Ria is "the" reason for the existence of Aveiro -...still today! Without it, the city would not exist... as we know it, at least! The people of Aveiro live with her hand in hand since immemorial time- surviving from fishing, seaweed, the salt tradition, ... The Ria de Aveiro extends over an area of about 11 000 hectares - the largest wetland area of northern Portugal - with Special Protection Area for Birdlife status of Natura 2000 and considered an IBA - Important Bird Area - by Birdlife International. The Ecomuseum "Marinha da Troncalhada", property of the City of Aveiro, is a traditional salina, where you can observe traditional procedures and tools used in the work of the salt and the toil of everyday life of traditional salt exploration. |
The Mountains
In the distance, looking at the horizon where the sun rises, is the first glimpse of mountains and hills that characterize the morphology of the countryside. At a distance of a pleasant car journey, visitors of Aveiro will enjoy superb mountain landscapes, rich in natural, historical and ethnographic patrimony. The Gastronomy
Aveiro does not clash with the rest of our country with regard to eating! It is a place of delicacies to do die for. Those who visit us carry with them the unique tastes of the region, for later to remember ... The egg yolk pastries, particularly "Ovos Moles", are the culinary symbol of Aveiro par excellence. But not only ... At the table the fish, from the river and the sea, is king. Typical are the various ways to cook the eels of the lagoon and the codfish, the latter the heritage of an important tradition of codfish fishing in the distant waters of Newfoundland. |
